Calmount 4 kvar 480/3/60 power factor correction system

Calmount 3 Phase Power Factor Capacitor Unit
This is a good used 4 kvar Calmount Power Factor Capacitor Unit which was developed to be applied using the “CAL” principle as described in the “Calmanual” (Power Factor Correction Application Guide). It is a 4 kvar Capacitor for 480 Volt, 3 Phase, 60 Hz systems.

In most modern electrical distribution systems, the predominant loads are resistive and inductive. Resistive loads are incandescent lighting and resistance heating. Inductive loads are A.C. Motors, induction furnaces, transformers and ballast-type lighting. Inductive loads require two kinds of power: (1) active (or working) power to perform the work (motion) and (2) reactive power to create and maintain electro-magnetic fields. The vector sum of the active power and reactive power make up the total (or apparent) power used. This is the power generated by the utility for the user to perform a given amount of work.
* Active power is measured in KW (1000 Watts)
* Reactive power is measured in KVAR (1000 Volt-Amperes Reactive)
* Total Power is measured in KVA (1000 Volts-Amperes)
A low power factor requires a larger amount of KVA to accomplish a fixed amount of work (KW), whereas a high power factor would require a lesser amount of KVA to accomplish the same amount of work. Utilities provide the KVA to the user, and by means of continuous metering, they bill the user each month, and provide actual values of the components of power. If the values shown on the bill indicate a low power factor, many utilities will add a penalty to the bill. In like manner, a high power factor may result in a reduction in the over-all cost of total power consumed.
These capacitors are designed for low-voltage (600 volts or less) industrial power factor correction in systems where harmonics or power quality are not a concern.
Capacitor assemblies are made-up of individually replaceable, 3-phase cells. Self-contained 3-phase cells are used so that imbalanced capacitive loading does not occur. For the same reason each cell is protected by an internal pressure-actuated interrupter that disconnects all 3-phases of the cell from the line. This also prevents a cell case rupture. The cell is an industrial grade, dry-type construction with a 20 year rated life and losses of less than 1/2 watt per KVAR. The dielectric film used is self-clearing metallized polypropylene. The cell has a hermetically sealed, steel case with threaded insulated terminals for firm connection. A set of discharge resistors to reduce residual voltage to less than 50 volts in one minute are mounted on the insulated terminals of each cell (per N. E. C.).
The wire connection to the capacitor cell terminal post is made with only ring-type sta-kons. This provides a positive electrical and physical connection.
All enclosures are built to NEMA 12 specifications for indoor use. They are gasketed with no knockouts and are furnished with a ground lug. The “K” series is designed with built-in mounting brackets for wall or shelf mounting. It has a lift-off cover which exposes the front, top and both sides for ease of installation and maintenance. This series is designed for shelf or wall mounting. Its most typical installation is on top of control enclosures.
• Pre-punched holes for mounting on bottom and back of the enclosure
• Lift-off cover exposing the top, both sides and the front for ease of installation
• Industry standard fuse blocks and fuses
• 3-phase replaceable capacitor cells with built-in pressure actuated interrupters
• Threaded positive-contact connections
