The ISO 7221 chips are rated at 4KV peak isolation - see the corresponding datasheet for details. The user will need to download the appropriate USB driver, from the FTDI website (search on Google for 'FTDI'). Once this driver is installed your software can treat the USB inerface as a virtual COM port. You need to use the system software tools provided with Windows to determine which COM port number has been assigned to this device, e.g, COM 3 and upwards. Sometimes during experimentaion the Windows registry will inadvertantly assign larger and larger COM port numbers, to the device until your software reports that the COM port is no longer supported, at this point you should download a '.EXE' program from FTDI called 'FTCLEAN.EXE'. When run this will clear the registry, and on next use a sensible COM port number will be assigned, e.g, COM 3.
